About Early Orthodontic Treatment
Many orthodontic problems can be corrected early. This allows the teeth and jaws to develop normally. Early treatment works great for crossbites, underbites, protruding teeth, severe crowding, and thumb or tongue habits.
Benefits of Orthodontic Treatment for Children
Some orthodontic problems are easier to fix in younger patients. Crossbites, for example, can easily be corrected with an expander in kids age 8-12. In adults, however, crossbites often require jaw surgery to correct.
Early treatment can:
Open more space for crowded teeth, allowing the permanent teeth to erupt into better positions
In some cases, take care of all problems early enough to avoid full orthodontic treatment
Fix crossbites and underbites early, allowing the jaws and teeth to grow and develop normally
When Should My Child Start Orthodontic Care?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that all children be evaluated for orthodontic needs at age 7. Usually we can tell by then if there are bite issues or severe crowding. There is a wide range of normal for the age that permanent teeth erupt, so some children are ready for early treatment at age 6, and others not until 8 or 9.
Most dentists are good about referring you for a consultation if they see problems. If there is any doubt, just make an appointment! We don’t charge for consultations, and we can evaluate your child’s needs and develop a plan of action – even if we decide not to start right away.

What should I do if my child sucks their thumb or fingers?
If your child continues to suck a thumb or finger(s) after about age 6, we can place a habit appliance. This appliance helps to train the child to keep the digits out of the mouth.
