Learn more about common orthodontic issues and our troubleshooting tips for life with braces.
Most orthodontic problems are related to lack of space for the teeth or jaw size discrepancies. In many cases we can correct these problems with timely treatment. In severe cases we need to work with an oral surgeon so we correct the issue.
Sometimes teeth grow into the mouth in a different position than normal. This is called abnormal eruption.
Crossbite is when lower back teeth bite to the outside of upper teeth. This causes damage to the teeth and affects the bone and gums around the teeth, and can even change jaw growth patterns!
When the teeth don’t have enough room to fit in a nice row, this is called crowding.
Excessive spacing is when there are gaps in between the teeth.
When the front teeth don’t come together all the way, this is called an open bite.
Excessive overbite is when there is excessive vertical overlap of the front teeth.
Excessive overjet (commonly called overbite by laypersons) is when the top front teeth are too far in front of the bottom front teeth.
An underbite is when the lower front teeth bite in front of the upper front teeth.
Not sure what is normal versus what could be an emergency while wearing braces or undergoing orthodontic care? Here’s some of our advice:
When brackets or bands break, they separate from the tooth. They will usually still be attached to the wire, but they will move more than normal. This is often caused by eating hard foods, or from playing with the braces. Please call us if something comes loose and you think it is broken.
Sometimes the wires on the braces shift and poke your cheeks or gums. You can place orthodontic wax over the wire to cushion it. Please call us if you need help with a wire poke.
It is normal to have tooth pain after having your braces placed or adjusted, and it usually goes away after a few days. This is from the bone adapting to the tooth movement. Ibuprofen is the best thing for tooth pain. If the pain does not go away, or is severe or different than usual braces pain, please call us.
-Traumatic injury to the mouth
-Loose expander or other appliance
-Infection in the mouth or face
-Severe pain in the mouth or face
Please call the office right away!
